11.5m fall - seen here with family about to jump! |
This is our own little slice of paradise. 1.5km from our home is this paddock, with a gorgeous river boundary on 3 sides. The feature of the entire property is this stunning 11.5m high waterfall. Over the years we have built a mud brick pizza oven, with a pergola, picnic tables etc, and spend lots of our time down there over summer and autumn, either just our family, or with friends and neighbours. Kayaking, swimming, fossil hunting, grass sliding, petanque, camping, eating!
My main activity has been developing the planting of just under 1 hectare we fenced off 10 years ago, when we dammed a small gully to create a series of ponds/wetlands, and put in a driveway in. This planting corridor links all the way from the road, and surrounding hill country farmland, to the river.
Over the years I have learnt so much, not only about best planting practice (and how to outsmart the hares), but also initial planting layout leaving enough space for pathways, and retaining vistas.

Ferns are my passion, and many many many have been planted here, transplanted from nearby pine forest. |
